Things should be slowing down as we approach the end of the year, but as anyone who has been in ministry for a long time knows, that doesn’t happen. December is a rush with last-minute planning and an avalanche of events, even before we reach Christmas Eve!
I’ve usually struggled to enjoy the seasons of Advent and Christmas because of this busyness. Advent is a blur of activity, and by the time Christmas arrives, I’m too exhausted to truly enjoy it. I’m so occupied talking about the birth of Jesus that I often miss it when the blessed event happens. Perhaps the same happens to you.
I’m asking God to help me do better this year and open my heart to experience the true joy of the Advent and Christmas seasons. Jesus is coming into the world, whether I do nothing or everything. That’s good news! God is not dependent on me, but I surely rely on God. I’m grateful for God’s faithfulness.
It is easy to miss Jesus unless we are intentional about finding him. Although Jesus was born on a silent night, it was largely missed by everyone except for the shepherds, who were amazed, and the magi, who were curious. Maybe what we need during this holy time is more amazement and curiosity and less busyness.
I know it’s difficult to do less during these holy seasons. The demands seem to never stop, and I know pastors will rise to meet them. I appreciate these efforts, and I know that God will bless the congregations you serve during Advent and Christmas. But I also pray that each of you will find moments to simply be still, listen, see, and wonder at what God is doing as Christ is born. Be immersed in the Spirit and let your heart be warmed as you experience joy beyond all understanding.
