“I was in prison and you came to visit me.” “When did we see you in prison and go to visit you?”The King will reply, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers (or in this case, sisters) of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25: 34, 36b and 39.
Benson Memorial has an active prison ministry and recently provided space to train 125 volunteers from Wake County and other nearby communities for ministry with the incarcerated. Benson Memorial specifically is in ministry with the Pregnant Population at the NC Correctional Institution for Women, more frequently known as Women’s Prison in Raleigh. The purpose of this ministry is not to “teach, preach, or counsel, but to share happy fellowship with these women, who in this special time of their lives are away from families and any support groups.
Benson Memorial is also in the process of establishing a Second Chance Ministry designed to help those leaving incarceration successfully rebuild their lives. In September, the church held a Re-Entry Simulation, sponsored by Our Journey and the NC Council of Churches, where participants learned of the many and complex challenges faced by those leaving prison.
Anyone wanting to learn more or to participate in building these ministries is welcome to contact Benson Memorial at 919-787-0789.
