“I felt that God had dropped me off at college and said He would pick me back up in 4-6 years.” – This is a quote from a young adult.
Not just any young adult, but one who grew up in the church, knew the Bible, knew the songs, and knew the motions. However, college proved to be too much of an inconvenience for someone with a devout faith in God. Instead it was a place to explore the many facets of life and leave behind the faith he or she possessed in high school.
The recent PEW Research Demographic Study, which has been covered extensively by national media outlets, reports young adults (18-30) are not just ditching church – but ditching faith altogether.
Many churches from Burlington to Burgaw and from Southern Pines to Southern Shores are looking around their sanctuaries and noticing a huge gap. The age between high school youth and young parents.
They are not there.
What’s a church to do?
This is where Spark comes in, a new initiative by the NCCUMC Young Adult Ministry Team to ignite conversations about what can be done in local communities to love, reach, and minister to a seemingly absent demographic in many congregations.
