The title makes my point: after Easter morning, Jesus tends to be experienced when disciples are gathered together: when Mary Magdalene runs back to them hiding together, when they are in the Upper Room, when Thomas rejoins the others, when Cleopas and his companion are at table, when the disciples are fishing.
In that act of community, we are open to an experience literally from beyond ourselves. The Holy Spirit comes in our midst and speaks new truth.
Jin Lee, our out-going Capital District Lay Leader, has given me community in these past 8 months that I’ve been blessed to be in this role. We actually reached out to each other before I started the ministry. She has always given me support and Spirit-filled input; I am grateful for her.
As she goes in July to a new ministry of serving as the Heritage District ADS, I ask you to welcome our new Co-District Lay Leaders! They too will give us guidance and the spiritual companionship in which we are likely to meet the Risen Lord.
Roxie Floyd has served the church both at Wilson Temple UMC where she is a member and in the district as a member of the UM Women leadership team. A life-long UMC member interested in serving in a way that continues to introduce the good news of Christ to the high-tech, app savvy, let’s get it done now generation. Loves to read and is the family historian and avid photographer. Married to Connie Floyd for 28 years, one son, Daniel F. and lots and lots of relatives.
Mark Schneider, currently First Church – Cary’s Lay Leader, recently helped lead our Leadership Training Event for lay officers. He is exercising his faith in a variety of ways, including serving on several church committees and teaching the “Y-ME” Adult Sunday School class. He is blessed with Ellen, his loving and impressively patient wife of 30 years, and two amazing adult sons, Michael and Daniel. Most of all, Mark is humbled by the surprising ways in which God continues to call him to serve.
Roxie and Mark will divide the responsibilities for helping lead our district as our Lay Leaders.
Remember that it was when the disciples were all together in the Upper Room that Pentecost happened and the Church was born. As we work together – in the middle of all our church’s questions – may we experience Pentecost anew.
Grace and peace,
