I am writing articles for a few weeks in response to questions I was asked during recent conversations I have had with pastors in the district. So far, I’ve talked about my prayer life, my time use, and now I want to respond to questions about the church’s future.
While I misunderstood my pastor, he got it right (and was quoting the then-current United Methodist liturgy). The Church–the Body of Jesus here on earth–will be here until the Lord comes. That is a statement of faith, to be sure, but it is also a statement of experience: God uses us and validates our ministries and is changing the world through us in ways that people do not want to go away. The Church will be here in the future.
Grace and peace in the Church and to you.
