- A and B
- All the above.
Bet you made 100.
Soon each charge in The Capital District (as in all of United Methodism) will have a Charge Conference. A great question to ask is “How come?”
Some folks wonder and we, lay and clergy folks who read the district newsletter, need to be able to explain.
We have a charge conference every year in every United Methodist charge (A charge is the church(es) under the charge or care of a pastor.) because we are a people on a mission.
Our book of covenant or Book of Discipline requires a charge conference in our Constitution and explains that the “charge conference shall be the connecting link between the local church and the general Church and shall have general oversight of the church council(s).” [Para. 247.1]
What all that means is that since United Methodist Christians define themselves as having a mission, “to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world” the mission of a charge conference is to reflect and to pray and to plan on how each charge is doing that work.
The charge conference itself can be as simple as electing officers and establishing a pastor’s compensation but the point is that those officers and that pastor – and anything else done at the conference – are supposed to be about the mission.
To me, that’s always meant charge conference is a time to remember, sometimes gladly and sometimes sadly, about “stuff that’s gone on before”, but it is always a time to celebrate anew the God who calls us to new life and to new mission in Jesus Christ.
I look forward to seeing you at your Charge Conference, where with other charges, we will celebrate what God is calling you to.
