Know what it represents? (It’s not some odd numerology even though, ironically, it is a multiple of 12 x 12 which might lead to all sorts of speculation.)
144 is the number of discrete ministries we heard about at Annual Conference 2017. I counted. (For the sake of ease I counted things like camps as “1” even though our Conference Camp and Retreat Ministries operates 3 camps; GBGM counted as “1”, etc.)
That means that there are at least 144 ways you and your church are in ministry at this moment through the beauty of The United Methodist Church. I sat amazed at the places and ways in which I engage in ministry, places, and ways where I will literally never go but am already going through the ministries of the church.
We celebrate those ministries every time we engage each other. As United Methodists, in the middle of all we discuss as a church family, I invite you to celebrate the worldwide and North Carolina-specific focus of our service. It’s reason to be glad and proud (in a very-Christ like way).
You’ll hear below ways to share in one of those ministries (summer camperships) but I ask you to offer God a prayer of thanks for the enormous embrace of our church and for the difference we each make united together.
We will explore some of what it means to be knit together at our upcoming district clergy meeting on Tuesday, July 11, beginning at 10:00 am at Edgerton Memorial Church in Selma. I look forward to seeing each of the clergy there.
144? It’s a dozen dozens. It’s one small statement of what God does through us. What a great number!
