I am enjoying my time with each pastor. They teach me a lot. Gregg Presnal, told me that he and the folks of Hopewell Church were called to be “gracious missionaries.” I’ve pondered that phrase a lot and because I haven’t heard it, that I recall, in years, I’ve re-read some words I remember from seminary!
Origin, the early Christian thinker and writer, wrote that God-in-Jesus became a missionary for us. (Missionary wasn’t Origen’s word but “sent agent,” arguably translates into missionary doesn’t it?) God put us at the center of his passion when we were given Jesus, an agent sent on a mission.
We only send agents when we care. And we send agents to help others even when times are hard (like now). And we only send agents who can do what needs to be done. Jesus is the response God gives our hurting world, the response of redemptive hope.
Beautiful language: we are sent a gracious missionary. We are called to be gracious missionaries in that One’s Name.
We are loved.
Thanks be to God for the Gift of Christmas.
May you be blessed by God’s gracious missionary to you: Jesus.
