I was struck all Holy Week and early Easter season by the relentless witness of Scripture. And not just about Jesus but also about the disciples who became apostles. It made me remember things I learned long ago and value today. The disciples were faint-hearted at best during Jesus’ trials but the apostles were fearless having experienced the Resurrection. A disciple is a student or follower, an apostle is a witness, a witness to Life!
We talk about making disciples which is what people can do. God created an apostolic faith: a faith dependent on the witness of fallible people who were given an extraordinary joy: they experienced the Risen Christ. We proclaim that we in our time can experience that same Resurrection power. Some people know it in quiet ways; others loudly! But all of us are called to share the Good News of Resurrection.
I am grateful that God used such broken and messed up folks to witness Jesus’ Rising. As the Apostle Paul said, God chose what the world thinks weak to speak amazing power. [I Corinthians 1:27]. That means when you and I think we are weak God may well be about to use us.
Amazing Easter Power! And God’s amazing answer to disciples who fear themselves too weak to make a difference. God simply says “Not so.” Welcome to the apostolic faith!
