Punching Holes in the Dark
Kingdom work! It’s what many of us reading this ”do” for a living. In my role I often find myself surrounded by gifted spiritual leaders who I serve under or alongside and the Light of the world is often pouring in! Worship is a regular occurrence, not only on Sunday mornings but often other times throughout the week. I recognize that I am SO blessed to have these opportunities! But as I reflect, am I doing all that I am called to do to share the Light with others through my actions?
Earlier this week Capital District Clergy gathered for a spiritual retreat where Robert Benson shared excerpts from his new book “Punching Holes in the Dark”. We were reminded of the Word in the Gospel “And that light is the Light of the world, and the darkness will never overcome it.”
We reflected on how we cannot know much about the kingdom to come unless we are sharing messages of hope with others in the darkness. There are people that we pass by every day, who we may not even see, (intentionally or unintentionally), but they see us. When we avoid these people, not only do we miss out on an opportunity to be “Jesus” to them, we also miss out on meeting Jesus through them.
Let us not be so busy doing work for the Kingdom to come and miss out on the Kingdom work that we are all called to do here and now. Let us not forget the words of Saint Francis of Assisi “Shout the gospel from the rooftops. If necessary, use words.”
