Have you ever struggled with maintaining balance in your life? How does your to-do list compare with your completed list? Have you ever wished there were more hours in your day and/or days in your week? If I’m honest, it’s a daily struggle for me, and I suspect that I’m not alone in this.
Many years ago I wrote a personal mission statement after attending a workshop created to help guide one through such a thing, and I’m embarrassed to say that I don’t remember the exact verbiage that I came up with, but I do remember that it strongly stated my desire to be aligned with God’s will for my life and to nurture relationships with God, my immediate and extended family, those with whom I work and my friends. These guiding principles often emerge as I consider ways that I spent my time.
Several years ago, I was able to hone in a different way as I joined with others to form a covenant group and we together decided on some specific ways that we wanted to encourage one another, recognizing that the accountability and ways that we watch over one another in love helps us stay aligned. The covenant we created, and meet weekly to discuss, helps us to keep in mind the necessity to include acts of compassion, justice, devotion and worship each week.
As I attempt to help others in need, show appreciation for others, practice responsible stewardship, become aware of and respond to social issues, practice acts of devotion, and worship regularly, I often need the grace that we offer to one another as we re-affirm our covenant by saying together each week “recognizing that there are times that we cannot live up to the standards we have set for ourselves, we covenant to support each other in an encouraging manner.”
There have been times when I’ve had to make very difficult decisions when my plans no longer aligned with God’s plans for my life. I’ve had to say “no” to some things that I previously felt called to and passionate about doing so that I could say “yes” to other things where I felt a nudge from God. I could work 24/7, because I love the work that I do and think it’s aligned with God’s will for me and I could also spend time engaged in all sorts of other things that I think are also aligned with God’s will.
“For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.” [Ephesians 2:10]
This text challenges me to continue to remain open to what God has prepared for me each day. My prayer is that each of us will remain open to the leading of the Spirit as we seek to maintain balance in our lives and as we align ourselves with the good work that God has prepared for us.
