May the God of peace equip you with every good thing to do his will, by developing in us what pleases him through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory forever and always. Amen. [Hebrews 13:21]
The title of this message is familiar to many of us. It’s a paraphrase of what we are reminded of as the Old and New Testaments are filled with stories of people who God called to accomplish one thing or another, and oftentimes the response from the one called is some version of “Why me, Lord? Surely there is someone more qualified!” We might add today “and I’m so busy!”
We often compare ourselves to others, thinking we don’t measure up to their success, perhaps thinking that another is more educated, or more experienced, or more articulate. But God is calling each of us into service, and it’s up to us to pay attention and take advantage of opportunities that are provided for us to become equipped to do the work we are called to do.
One way for us to become equipped is to participate in Lay Servant Ministry courses. The Basic Lay Servant Ministry course should be a requirement for all laity who want to move from being a “pew potato” to an active participant in the life of the church and as a overview for all who have actively served for years. Throughout the course we learn about the early Methodist movement, we discuss the meaning and purpose of our spiritual gifts and our need to respond to God’s call. We explore what it means to be a spiritual leader and explore various caring, outreach and hospitality ministries and learn tips for communicating and listening well. We also consider what our role might be in fulfilling the Great Commission and how we can better become equipped to live into our role, learning more about various forms of and tools for ministry where we might find ourselves feeling led.
I can personally attest to the ways that I have felt nudges to step into various forms of ministry over the years and God has always provided the resources needed for me to fulfill what God is calling me to do. Much of this equipping has come from various training opportunities that I have taken advantage of.
This coming Saturday, you will have the opportunity to participate in a Lay Servant Ministry course. Two are offered: “Basic” and “Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts”. You are encouraged to register to attend and to spread the word to others who may have an interest.
The deadline to register has been extended to Thursday, March 30th at 11:45 am.
Y’all come now, ya hear?
