“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” [Ecclesiastes 3:1]
This time of year, many of us are experiencing all sorts of changes. Children are going back to school and are getting adjusted to a new schedule, new teachers and opportunities to reconnect with old friends while making new ones. Some parents are adjusting to having a quiet house during the day or an empty nest as college students have returned to their campuses.
There are opportunities for new beginnings in our local churches. Often new small groups and Bible studies are launched and outreach and mission teams may be inviting others to join in God’s mission. Churches with traditional Sunday School classes are likely progressing kids from one class to another.
As we encounter changes that take place in our families and churches, we need to remember that transitions are filled with possibilities! As we move from one season to another we have an opportunity for our routines and behaviors to change. Maybe it’s time to become more intentional in spiritual growth, or to spend more time studying God’s word alone and/or with others. Maybe it’s time to put our faith into action in a new and more meaningful way.
For some of us, it’s a time to examine our exercise and eating habits to begin taking better care of ourselves. For others, it may be a time to work towards de-cluttering and seek ways to simplify our lives and homes. Others may need to get a better handle on spending and create a budget.
I invite each of you to join me in a time of self-examination during this new season that is before us and to set some goals and then create a plan to achieve them. Start with one or two things! Don’t worry, before long it will be time to make New Year’s Resolutions and we’ll have another opportunity.
Each of us in the Capital District is entering into a new season of ministry together with our new District Superintendent. We have received the gift once again of a strong leader as our Chief Missional Strategist. I invite you to join me in welcoming Dr. Gray Southern as he takes the helm. Let us celebrate the connection and seek opportunities to partner in mission and ministry together. We can accomplish so much more for the Kingdom when we combine our efforts.
The following words by the prophet remind us that if we will just be still and listen, God’s plans for us will be made known: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” [Jeremiah 29:11]
