Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
As I reflect on the abundant blessings in my own life, it can almost be overwhelming and it seems that the only appropriate response is to praise God! God has blessed me with an incredible family, both immediate and extended, and with a number of close friendships. God has led me to and equipped me for meaningful work, both as a servant in and through my local church, in the community and professionally. God has always provided for my family’s basic needs and God has always been present, especially felt in challenging times such as when serious health problems have affected those closest to me.
How can I respond to these abundant blessings? In addition to praising God, giving is one mark of faithful discipleship. Learning to write the check for the tithe first, and managing all else with the other 90% is what we’ve been taught over and over in the text. It seems that Jesus talks about money more than any other topic and yet we often shy away from conversations around money in the church. We are called to share and give faithfully out of our abundance.
How we use our money is a spiritual question. When we step out in faith to give and share we become more aware of God’s provision in our lives. When we believe that there is plenty and we live our lives with assurance rather than worry, we are a living witness that we are striving to be a part of kingdom work.
“Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” [Luke 12:32]
